AUSTIN BARBECUE SANDWICH MINI-CHAIN CLOSES CEDAR PARK RESTAURANT
Austin barbecue restaurant Slab BBQ is closing its Cedar Park location over the weekend. The last day of service for the 905 East Whitestone Boulevard business will be on Saturday, April 27.
Co-founder and managing partner Raf Robinson writes to Eater that, “unfortunately, major challenges over the last couple years between inflation, labor shortages, and ultimately, rent increase led us to the decision to not renew our lease.” He hopes to eventually reopen a new location somewhere in the neighborhood.
The team had opened the Cedar Park location in 2021. Its other three locations — Wooten, near Garrison Park, and Sunset Valley — are remaining open.
Tex-Mex chain opens new Austin location
Austin-born Tex-Mex chain Chuy’s is opening its Mueller location next week. It’ll open at 2024 Aldrich Street starting on Tuesday, April 30. Expect its menu of various Tex-Mex foods and drinks from the company’s seventh Austin-area restaurant. Its hours are from 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and then from 11 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
Ludacris enjoys Texas New American food
Rapper and actor Ludacris dined at New American restaurant Emmer & Rye last weekend, according to the business’s public relations company. He posted on his Instagram stories a video of a server pouring broth onto a plate of red snapper crudo on April 21. He was in town because he was performing at Georgetown music festival Two Step Inn that weekend. During his time in the city, he apparently rented a boat and drove along the river.
Austin bars get national recognition
The nominees for Tales of the Cocktail’s annual Spirited Awards are here and there are a bunch of Austin bars that were recognized in the U.S. Central regions. These include:

- Central East Austin bar Nickel City (Best Bar Team)
- Downtown hidden cocktail bar Here Nor There (Best Cocktail Bar )
- South Congress Hotel’s cocktail bar Watertrade (Best Hotel Bar)
- East Austin cocktail bar Daydreamer (Best New Cocktail Bar)
- Travis Heights’ Hotel Magdalena cocktail bar and listening room Equipment Room (Best New Cocktail Bar)
- East Austin bar Murray’s Tavern (Best New Cocktail Bar)
The four finalists in each category will be announced on June 17.
