ALL-PURPOSE PIZZA ADDS A SHAW SANDWICH SHOP — AND MORE OPENINGS

Summer is officially here, which means there’s plenty of fresh new openings to know about. Consider this your guide to all the new restaurants, bars, and cafes that have debuted in June 2024 so far. This list will be updated weekly. If there’s an opening in your neighborhood that we’ve missed, let us know at [email protected].

June 28

SHAW—The crew behind All-Purpose Pizza transforms the next-door space that formerly housed Buttercream Bakeshop into a casual sandwich shop and Italian market. As the name implies, Fossette Focacceria specializes in sandwiches built on fluffy focaccia squares, as well as espresso drinks fueled by Portland’s Coava Coffee and pastries like mascarpone cinnamon buns starting at 8 a.m. Airy focaccia is the base for breakfast sandwiches stuffed with bacon, eggs, and fontina cheese, and hearty lunchtime orders served until 3 p.m. come loaded with the likes of deli meats, braised short ribs, and eggplant Milanese. Chef-owner Mike Friedman’s Tuscan-style takeout also sells pantry essentials like pastas, olive oils, jams, salumi, cheeses, wines, and beers. 1250 Ninth Street NW

June 25

OLD TOWN—Pitango Gelato & Coffee swings open right near the Potomac River waterfront with a luscious lineup of 20 gelato and sorbet flavors made with everything from Italian nuts to single-origin chocolates. The new scoop shop, one of Pitango’s largest to date, carves out room for a lengthy pastry counter selling croissants, cookies, scones, and pastries and coffee drinks from Vigilante espresso. To capture the busy summer season, the shop stays open until 11 p.m. (and midnight on weekends). Old Town Alexandria marks Pitango’s eighth area store to date, with a recent arrival at the Wharf. 115 S. Union Street, Alexandria, Virginia

June 21

ALEXANDRIA—Ivy City-born brewery Atlas expands across state lines with a 2,000-barrel production facility, tap room with 16 draft lines, and slices from New York-style hitmaker Andy’s Pizza. To celebrate the arrival at Carlyle Crossing, Atlas Alexandria Brewery & Tap Room serves a free slice with the purchase of a pint of beer (Friday, June 21 through Sunday, June 23). Atlas’s third brewery and tap room to date showcases its six core beers, including its 2023 World Beer Cup winner Silent Neighbor, plus limited edition releases brewed (and only available) in Alexandria. Located walking distance from the King Street and Eisenhower Ave. Metro stations, the 6,000-square-foot newcomer features a summer-ready outdoor patio. 2501 Mandeville Lane, Alexandria, Virginia

June 20

NAVY YARD—The Cove, a sandy hangout that pulled up to the banks of the Anacostia last fall, reactivated the prized waterfront patch where Bardo Brewing once stood. The all-outdoor oasis reopens on the first day of summer with new additions like more cabanas, an “island” bar, and turf-covered grounds. Opening food vendors include Bun’d Up serving smash burgers with an Asian twist (June 20-23, 27-30) and TexasQ’s beef brisket, flavorful sausages, beef and pork ribs from pitmaster Manuel Vasquez (July 4-7, 11-14). With 40,000 square feet to play with, there’s ample room for yard games and multiple sections to get their own name and identity — starting with a waterfront Beach Club welcoming guests upon entry. The nucleus of the operation is a soaring DJ pavilion decked out with Tulum-styled greenery, woven basket lights, and live-edge tables. Arlington nightlife group B Social Hospitality teamed up with former NFL-turned-TV star Vernon Davis on the playful project. Hours start at 5 p.m. on Thursdays and Fridays and 2 p.m. on weekends. 71 Potomac Avenue SE

NOMA—Chef Tim Ma’s late-night Peruvian chicken shack Chop Shop returned in the Northeast alley next to sibling garage bar Nice & Easy. After opening weekend (5 p.m. to midnight), daily hours will kick off at 11 a.m. 1120 Congress Street NE

June 19

SHAW—Laotian chef Seng Luangrath (Thip Khao, Padaek) reboots the 5-year-old Shaw space that formerly housed cocktail and small plates bar Hanumanh. Newly named Baan Mae, billed as a “progressive Southeast Asian cousin” to its other restaurants, opens with giant head-on prawns with Lao chili paste, fish cake sliders with tofu mayo and pea shoots, and a list of mains like Southern-style curry with short ribs, potato, and Jasmine rice. A trio of opening cocktails includes the Next Question (calamansi-pickled plum, tequila, and orange blossom). 1604 7th Street NW

June 15

H STREET NE—Experimental comfort foods chef Damian Brown expanded upon his wonderfully wacky waffle and flavor combos at Uncaged Chefs in District Heights with a polished, flower-filled offshoot in Truxton Circle last year. At its newly relocated Northeast digs, the Southern comfort food spot with a Caribbean twist continues to offer jerk salmon and grits with creamy Cajun sauce or plenty of alfredo pastas. Uncaged Mimosas goes big on its name during its super-long brunch (11 a.m. to 8 p.m.) that brings bottomless mimosas ($25) and hookah ($50) to the table. 1242 H Street NE

June 14

DUPONT CIRCLE—Darvish Kitchen, a Persian restaurant from the owner of Lima Twist, opened in the old Mari Vanna space with a lunch, brunch, and dinner menu full of dips, soups, rice dishes, branzino, and turmeric-flanked lamb shank. 1141 Connecticut Avenue NW

ALEXANDRIA—Drake-backed hot chicken chain Dave’s Hot Chicken, founded in LA as a late-night pop-up, opened its fourth area location. 7015-E Manchester Boulevard, Alexandria, Virginia
