A 98-YEAR-OLD ICE CREAM SHOP FROM CHICAGO IS OPENING IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA

Rainbow Cone, a 98-year-old ice cream shop from Chicago, is opening three locations in Southern California. The first store is slated to debut later this year in Orange County at 9527 Valley View Street in Cypress. The two other locations will be announced after the leases are signed, a rep tells Eater. Founded in 1926, Rainbow Cone is best known for its stacked ice cream slices that include five flavors perched on a single cone: chocolate, strawberry, Palmer House (vanilla with cherries and walnuts), pistachio, and orange sherbet.

The Southern California expansion is part of the brand’s recent push to franchise since being acquired by The Buona Companies, a prominent Chicago restaurant group and Italian beef producer. The nearly century-old chain currently has 13 locations in Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana, Michigan, and Florida, with more anticipated to open in Tennessee and Texas.
