PLEASE AND THANK YOU: NICK OFFERMAN AND LAGAVULIN JUST DROPPED ANOTHER EDITION OF THEIR SINGLE MALT

Tequila is the leading spirit when it comes to celebrity-backed brands, but there are a select few who have chosen the whiskey path and actually endorsed some quality products (sorry, Drake, Virginia Black isn't one of them). Actor, author, woodworker, and self-described whisky fan Nick Offerman linked up with Islay distillery Lagavulin a few years ago, and the details of their fourth collaborative release were just announced: a smoky single malt with a Caribbean rum cask finish.

Lagavulin Offerman Edition: Caribbean Rum Cask Finished Aged 11 Years is the name of the new single malt, and pretty much all you need to know about the whisky is laid out right for you. This is an 11-year-old single malt distilled at the Islay distillery that was initially aged in bourbon and sherry casks before being finished for more than eight months in rum barrels sourced from the Caribbean. We did not get to sample the liquid yet, but the official tasting notes are tantalizing: lemon meringue, honey, vanilla, toffee, cinnamon, and maritime brine on the palate, balancing "tropical flavor and peaty character." "There have been many accusations leveled against me regarding my desire to concoct the perfect dram to sit and sip whilst viewing my favorite mermaid musicals, so that I might feel even more fully like a Scottish-Caribbean underwater siren-princess," said Offerman in a typically verbose and sarcastic statement. "To these scurrilous abusers I have only this to say: what I do in my own time, whether under the sea or above it, is nobody's business but my own. Slàinte mhath."

This new whisky follows three other Offerman-Lagavulin releases, all single malts aged for 11 years: Offerman Edition 11 Year Old, Guinness Cask, and Charred Oak Cask. Although finishing a single malt scotch in rum barrels is not a new technique, it can result in a fantastic whisky as proven by expressions like the Balvenie Caribbean Cask, Glenfiddich 21 Year Gran Reserva, and Tomintoul Caribbean Rum Cask Finish. The new Offerman Edition: Caribbean Rum Cask Finish seems to follow suit, having recently won a double gold at the 2024 San Francisco World Spirits Competition, the fourth time this collaborative whisky series has earned that medal.
