Just days after the highly-anticipated Hong Phat Supercenter opened the site of Southeast 82nd Avenue’s shuttered Walmart, the Portland food community received a stroke of bad luck with the sudden closure of the popular Eastport Food Center on 82nd and Southeast Center Street.
According to Antonio Chavez of the Los Tamales Locos cart, cart operators were given just over two weeks’ notice that the site had been sold and they would need to vacate. While Chavez’s Oaxacan cart managed to find a new home just across the street at Collective Oregon Eateries (CORE) and is experiencing levels of business close to what he found at Eastport, some carts like Year of the Fish (the cart was put up for sale on Facebook Marketplace) and Off the Leash appear to have closed permanently.
Below, find the new locations of several of the former Eastport vendors; this piece will be updated as carts find new homes.
With a tiny cart kitchen and a couple of rice cookers, this cart consistently offers some of the best South Asian food in town. Neighborhood fans will be relieved to learn it found a new home at the nearby Flipside carts on Southeast Foster and 92nd Avenue.
