HERE’S WHAT’S OPENING IN THE MICHELIN-STARRED OXALIS SPACE

In Prospect Heights, all-day cafe Cafe Mado is on track to open by the third week in May, in what had been the Michelin-starred Oxalis space from Redwood Hospitality, at 791 Washington Avenue, near Lincoln Place. The newest restaurant from the group follows the opening of Laurel Bakery, their spot in the Columbia Waterfront district that opened in mid-April.

The name Cafe Mado is a nod to Marie Louise “Madame Mado” Point, the wife and business partner of the father of modern French cuisine, Fernand Point; the chef and his wife ran the then-three-Michelin-starred La Pyramide in Vienne, France; she spearheaded the restaurant’s hospitality and maintained the quality and service of the restaurant after he died. The Brooklyn restaurant will serve sandwiches, seasonal salads, tartines, and entrees that take their cues from France, Italy, and California. The front of the space will offer takeout, with coffee, bakery, and a retail section, starting at 8:30 a.m. The sit-down cafe (with a full liquor license) will open from noon to 7:30 p.m., six days a week with both reservations and walk-ins once it’s in full swing; for the first month, the plan is weekend service. Esme is closing after a decade

The American restaurant Esme will close next month after a decade in Greenpoint. “With more great places to eat and drink in Greenpoint opening every day we simply feel that the best thing we can do is to create room for new projects and ideas,” Matthew Ricke, one of the owners, told Greenpointers. Ricke opened Esme in 2014 at 999 Manhattan Avenue, near Huron Street, with partner Adam Volk and chef Paul Myers. Despite having “no celebrity chef and no PR firm” it became a neighborhood staple. The last day is May 12.

More ‘cheese tea’ coming soon

At the end of the year, the Chinese cheese tea chain Hey Tea opened its first U.S. location in Midtown 1407 Broadway, between West 38th and 39th streets. There’s another coming soon. On April 26, the company is bringing its teas topped with salty foam to downtown Flushing with a new storefront at 36-56 Main Street, near 37th Avenue.
