Warriors star Draymond Green is making moves off the basketball court with a new project that will “reimagine contemporary Afro-Latin cuisine through an Ethiopian lens,” a press release shares. Together with AlaMar Dominican Kitchen and Sobre Mesa chef Nelson German and restaurateur and hospitality entrepreneur Guma Fassil of Meskie’s Kitchen and Garden in Berkeley, the trio will open Meski — named after Fassil’s mother — at 1000 Larkin Street in Nob Hill on Friday, March 7.
Diners can expect a mix of dishes such as sambusas with berbere-spiced beef and the Dominican stew sancocho on the menu, the San Francisco Chronicle reports, and the bar menu will continue along that theme with cocktails also featuring Caribbean and Ethiopian ingredients and flavors. “It’s merging two diasporas,” Fassil told the news outlet. “The traditional ingredients of Ethiopian cuisine and mixing it with the passion and adventure and seasonality of Dominican cuisine.”
Restaurants across the Bay Area, Los Angeles, and nationwide, are closed on Monday, February 3, to protest the Trump Administration’s anti-immigrant policies. ABC 7 reports that places such as Casa de la Condesa Restaurant in the Mission District are one of many businesses that closed in solidarity as U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement targeted sanctuary cities, including San Jose, following Trump’s inauguration on Monday, January 20. The protest highlights the role of immigrants in the U.S. economy and has been a tradition since 2006, but this year organizers moved up the date in response to President Donald Trump’s new immigration policies.
Ayesha Curry is set to close her lifestyle store and cafe, Sweet July, on Sunday, February 9. An Instagram post released on Saturday, February 1, announced the news, stating in part, “In order to prioritize the safety of our patrons and staff, we have made the difficult decision to close our Sweet July cafe and store in Oakland.” The post doesn’t get into any specific safety instances, but SFGATE points out that the shop was broken into in October 2022, causing the store to close briefly. We warned you back in early December that a Turtle Tower return seemed imminent, but now it’s been confirmed: Steaming bowls of pho will return to San Francisco’s Financial District at the former Barbacco space on California Street, KTVU reports. The Pham family is indeed involved, joining new managing partners Arash Ghanadan and Hilwin Wong, two fans of the restaurant. The duo calls the new Turtle Tower an “elevated experience” with murals and photos of the restaurant’s history, per KTVU, and the restaurant is expected to reopen in mid-February.
