ARBORETUM — Stellar French bakery and Julie Myrtille opened a new bakery this mid-December. The Rose Bakery features French baked goods and pastries, as well as American and English items, plus savory foods. (10000 Research Boulevard)

MUELLER — Houston-based all-day cafe mini-chain Dish Society opened its first Austin location in mid-December. On deck is all-day brunch, breakfast, and dinner, plus drinks. (1900 Aldrich Boulevard, Suite 130)

ROUND ROCK — Diner chain Waffle House opened its first location in the north-of-Austin suburb in mid-December, per Community Impact. (2651 S.A.W. Grimes Boulevard)

ROUND ROCK — Mac and cheese restaurant chain Macs opened its first Texas location within the suburban waterpark and hotel Kalahari Resorts & Conventions in mid-December. This means mac and cheese dishes with loads of mix-ins and toppings. (3001 Kalahari Boulevard)

OAKMONT HEIGHTS — Steakhouse chain Perry’s opened a new spinoff Mexican restaurant, Verdad, in mid-December with an array of meat entrees, fajitas, and tacos, along with cocktails. (2701 Perseverance Drive)

ROUND ROCK — Austin-area mini-chain restaurant Blue Corn Harvest Bar & Grill opened its fourth location north of Austin in mid-December, as reported by Community Impact, with a Southwestern food menu. (2980 Joe DiMaggio Boulevard)

CEDAR PARK — Chain restaurant Dog Haus opened its a new location of its biergarten in the northern suburb in mid-December. (3101 East Whitestone Blvd, Suite 200)

EAST AUSTIN — Nickel City’s Travis Tober and Juniper’s Nicholas Yanes opened Murray’s Tavern, an ode to New York City bars with tavern-style food and classic cocktails, in the former Gourmands space, in early December. (2316 Webberville Road)

ROSEDALE — A team of Uchiko alum opened Craft Omakase, a, well, omakase restaurant with a well-curated and thoughtful menu of Japanese nigiri and bites along with sakes and cocktails, in early December. (4400 North Lamar Boulevard, Suite 102)

CENTRAL EAST AUSTIN — Italian restaurant Intero turned the former Uncle Nicky’s space in the Frances Modern Inn into its own all-day-into-evening Italian cafe, Poeta in early December, with brunch, sandwiches, and pastas. (1123 East 11th Street)

CEDAR PARK — National burger chain Shake Shack opened a new Austin-area location up in Cedar Park in early December with drive-thru and dine-in services. (1905 East Whitestone Boulevard)

EAST CESAR CHAVEZ — Rainey Street stand Not a Damn Chance Burger (aka NADC) opened a new physical restaurant in early December, with its wagyu smash burgers, fries, and drinks. (1007 East Sixth Street)

DOWNTOWN — Italian restaurant Gusto opened a new Italian and French restaurant in the former La Traviata space in early December. Gina’s on Congress serves pastas and entrees and cocktails. (314 Congress Avenue)

November 2023

QUARRY — Local mini-chain Happy Chicks opened its third Austin location in early November, as reported by Community Impact, with its chicken tenders and sauces.

HOLLY — Vietnamese food truck Saigon Le Vendeur opened a physical restaurant with banh mi and vermicelli bowls in late November. Alas, this means its nearby food truck is closed. (2601 East Seventh Street, Unit 101)

NORTH LOOP — A new rotating restaurant space, Playground ATX, opened in mid-November, with its first pop-up tenant, East Meets Wings, from the shuttered Fil N’ Viet truck. This means pan-Asian chicken wings and more through at least April 2024. (5001 Airport Boulevard)

DOWNTOWN — Similarly, Austin-based pizza chain Via 313 turned its food truck at West Sixth Street’s Star Bar into a shared physical space in late November. (600 West Sixth Street)

NORTH AUSTIN — Fairweather Cider replaced outgoing cafe All Gimmicks with its own coffee shop in mid-November. (10609 Metric Boulevard, Suite 108)

ROUND ROCK — Chain Clean Juice opened a second area store with cold-pressed juices, acai bowls, salads, and wraps in mid-November, as reported by Community Impact. (2800 South I-35 Frontage Road Suite 315)

LAKELINE — After much delays, the first Austin location of Dallas dog park, restaurant, and bar Mutts Canine Cantina opened in mid-November, with puppy memberships and food and drinks courtesy of the American-ish restaurant and bar. (9825 North Lake Creek Parkway)

GEORGETOWN — A new British pub opened in the suburb in mid-November. Grumpy George Pub offers British-y goods like Scotch eggs, fish and chips, and cornish pastys, as well as drinks. There’s also a membership aspect. (114 East Seventh Street, Suite 112)

GEORGETOWN — Temple, Texas-based Italian restaurant La Riv Kitchen & Bar opened a second location north of Austin, as reported by Community Impact, in mid-November, with pastas, steaks, and more. (200 East Eighth Street, Suite 101)

PARMER SQUARE — A new Mexican restaurant, the Grill-eria, opened with tacos and gorditas in mid-November. (2309 West Parmer Lane)

ZILKER — A brand-new restaurant heralded by two New Yorkers-turned-Austinites opened with a fun modern Chinese menu in early November. Zoé Tong serves up entrees like roasted duck, noodles, and much more. (1530 Barton Springs Road)

DOWNTOWN — And then, similarly kind of at least, New York City-based modern Chinese restaurant Red Farm expanded into Austin in early November. (201 West Third Street)

BARRINGTON OAKS — Pan-Asian restaurant Fat Dragon opened up a sushi-dedicated restaurant in early November. Fat Dragon Sushi naturally has sushi and nigiri and rolls, as well as bento boxes. (8650 Springwood Springs Road, Suite 111)

SOUTH AUSTIN — A new fast-casual restaurant with rotisserie chicken and accompanying salads, wraps, and platters opened within the Big Bucket convenience store in early November, Ollie Birds. (8906 Brodie Lane)

HOLLY — Austin fast-casual mini-chain Poke Poke opened a fourth restaurant as part of a shared space with JuiceLand in early November. (2601 East Cesar Chavez Street)

EAST CESAR CHAVEZ — Eater Award-winning pizzeria Allday Pizza opened its second location at new cocktail bar Daydreamer in early November, with New York-style slices. (1708 East Sixth Street)

FAR SOUTHWEST AUSTIN — A new daytime Mexican cafe, Nieto’s, opened in early November, with tacos, coffee, and pastries. (8721 Highway 183)

EAST CESAR CHAVEZ — Austin Neapolitan pizzeria Bufalina got into the New York-style pizza game with its newest restaurant in late October. Palm Pizza offers thin-crust pies as well as a good selection of domestic wines. (1701 East Cesar Chavez Street)

SUNSET VALLEY — Gelato shop Andino Artisan Gelato opened within Market Fair space in late October, per Community Impact. (5400 Brodie Lane, Suite 235)

PFLUGERVILLE — A new Indian restaurant took over the former Kumar’s space in late October. Indian Cravings focuses on South Indian cuisine. (15803 Windermere Drive, Suite 206)

EAST AUSTIN — The Scratch Restaurant Group opened a standalone bakery in late October, Wolf and Wheat, under the helm of co-owner and pastry chef Margarita Kallas-Lee, with baked goods, breads, and desserts. (1009 East Sixth Street)

CENTRAL EAST AUSTIN — A new speakeasy-ish bar opened from the owner of Camp East, Arbor Food Park, and El Tigre, in late October. Trona embraces Mexican and Japanese vibes with related cocktails. (1812 East 12th Street)

SANDAHL/SOUTH AUSTIN — A new all-day-into-night restaurant, the Local, opened in late October with a wide-ranging menu of sandwiches, entrees like steak frites and grilled salmon, and more. (9901 Brodie Lane, Suite 120)

GEORGETOWN — Austin Italian restaurant Juliet opened its third location up in the northern suburb in late October. (701 South Main Street)

MCKINNEY — After closing in August, Austin food truck Texsueno reopened as a ghost kitchen restaurant in late October. ATX Cheeseburger serves smash burgers, tacos, and rice bowls, the latter under the name Lotus. (3400 Comsouth Drive)

SAN MARCOS — North Austin drive-thru restaurant Buddy’s Burger opened its second location in the west-of-Austin city in late October. (927 Texas Highway 80)

SAN MARCOS — A new pizzeria, Sylvia Pizza, opened in San Marcos in late October, with Neapolitan pies. (316 North Edward Gary Street, Suite D)

ROUND ROCK — Dallas-based chain Velvet Taco opened its third Austin-area location in late October, with its new-school taco menu. (2131 North I-35)

ALLANDALE — Taking over the shuttered Fat City Stacks restaurant and bar space at dog park and bar Yard Bar is Texas-y/American-y restaurant Camp Out as of late October. (6700 Burnet Road)

BOULDIN CREEK — The team behind Japanese restaurant Lucky Robot opened a new restaurant dedicated to Yucatán cuisine in late October, Nomade, in a breezy space. (1506 South First Street)

NORTH AUSTIN — A new Vietnamese restaurant, Pho 63, opened with pho and boba and other Southeast Asian dishes in mid-October. (907 Kramer Lane)

CEDAR PARK — Popular North Loop bagel shop Nervous Charlie’s expanded into the northern Austin suburb in mid-October, with its New York-style bagels and sandwiches. (410 West Whitestone Boulevard)

ROUND ROCK — A new restaurant with arcade games and the such, Back Porch Social, opened in mid-October with a general American food menu plus churros, as reported by Community Impact. (309 West Liberty Avenue)

MCKINNEY — South Lamar coffee shop and bar Radio opened its second location in southeast Austin, aka Radio/East, with its usual drinks array plus food trucks in mid-October. (3504 Montopolis Drive)

ARBORETUM — San Francisco-based sandwich national chain Ike’s opened another Austin-area location up north as of mid-October. This is its sixth location in the greater Austin area. (9828 Great Hills Trail)

DOWNTOWN — Rainey Street hotel the Cambria Hotel Downtown Austin opened a new 16th-floor bar, Limestone, in mid-October with a New American food and drinks menu and live music/DJs. (68 East Avenue)

TARRYTOWN — After Austin restaurant and bar Abel’s on the Lake closed at the end of 2022, a San Miguel de Allende, Mexico-based restaurant, Quince, opened its second American location in Austin in mid-October with a very wide-ranging international menu. (3825 Lake Austin Boulevard, Suite 201)

ROSEWOOD — A new bagel spot, Muzzy’s, opened in mid-October with two locations, one a food truck and the other this physical stand within the Camp East space. (909 East 12th Street)

CEDAR PARK — A new Japanese restaurant, Kane Sushi, opened in mid-October with a variety of nigiri, sashimi, noodles, teriyaki, and more, as well as reservations-only omakase and kaiseki options. (406 West Whitestone Boulevard)

LAKELINE — A new Sichuan-focused Chinese restaurant opened up near H Mart in early November. Mala Chili serves all sorts of spicy fish, chicken, and vegetable entrees. (11301 Lakeline Boulevard, Building 12, Suite 300)

CEDAR PARK — National fast-casual restaurant chain the Great Greek Mediterranean Grill opened its first Austin-area location in mid-September, as reported by Community Impact. (3101 East Whitestone Boulevard, Suite G100)

RAINEY — Controversial Austin chef Gabe Erales opened a new Mexican restaurant in downtown Austin, Bacalar, focusing on the Yucatán region, in mid-September. (44 East Avenue)

WEST CAMPUS — Growing hospitality company NoCo opened its next spot, sports bar Victory Lap, in early September. The bar serves beers and cocktails alongside food like smash burgers and chicken wings. (504 West 24th Street)

ZILKER — The South Austin location of Wanderlust Wine Company opened an on-site hidden wine cave tasting room in early September. Wanderlust Wine Cave offers wine tastings focusing on rotating regions as well as tapas. Reservations should be made online. (1601 Barton Springs Road)

MUELLER — The teams behind ice cream truck Merry Monarch and dog park and coffee shop Neighbors opened casual cafe Bottega in early September. There are Philadelphia-style ice creams as well as appetizers, tinned fish boards, and snacks. (2100 Robert Browning Street)

ROLLINGWOOD — National burger chain Whataburger opened its first digital kitchen with no people-to-people ordering services in Austin in early September. (3201 Bee Caves Road)

ANDERSON MILL — South Indian chain restaurant with locations across America and Canada opened its first Austin spot in early September. Godvari serves a variety of South Indian dishes from idli to briyanis to tandoori. (12233 Road-to-Market 620, Suite 205)

WEST BULL CREEK — Bee Caves Mexican restaurant Los Pinos Jalisco opened a second location out west in late August. (6203 North Capital of Texas Highway, Suite 100)

CAMPUS — A new pan-Asian fusion fast-casual restaurant, TeriBox, opened within the Dobie in late August, with burgers, fries, and boxed entrees. (2021 Guadalupe Stree Ste 234)

NORTH AUSTIN — A new Afghani restaurant, Afghan Village, took over what had been the original Usta location, sometime in the summer, serving kebabs (per Instagrammer Austin Halal Eats) and karahi (per Instagrammer Lucky Fatima). (9717 North Lamar Boulevard)

ROUND ROCK — Hawai‘i-based shave ice chain Ululani’s Hawaiian Shave Ice opened its first Texas location in late August, serving the icy treat in all sorts of fruit flavors, as well as coffee, chocolate, etc., plus the option to add ice cream or azuki beans. SPICEWOOD — Out on far west Austin, new casual cafe Winston’s opened in late August with coffee, breakfast (sourdough toasts), wood-fire pizza, and pastries. (4900 Bee Creek Road)

DOWNTOWN — After the splitting of Sammataro the pizza truck and Sammataro the restaurant, the latter renamed itself La Volta in late August. (900 West 10th Street)

EAST AUSTIN — Austin members club and venue Pershing took over what had been the Greater Goods’s space and turned it into the Pershing East Cafe in late August, serving coffee and food. (2501 East Fifth Street)

NORTH LOOP — The restaurant that replaced Russian House’s ATX Grill is a New European/American spot named Rosé Gosé, which opened in early March. There’s a raw bar, poke bowls, burgers, and pretty cocktails. (5201 Airport Boulevard)

CHERRYWOOD — Austin cafe Civil Goat opened its third location in early March, serving coffee, breakfast and lunch foods, beer, wine, and other drinks. (2610 Manor Road, Unit B)

ZILKER — A multi-part restaurant serving pizza, tacos, and subs, Tailor Shop Foodery includes a relocation of Menchaca Road gas station spot Pizzeria Grata, which opened in early March, and 1836 Tacos & Salsa, which opened in late March, joining the already opened Coast 2 Coast Subs (see February). MUELLER — Xian Sushi & Noodle opened a new restaurant dedicated to Asian bento boxes in early March. DOWNTOWN — An ambitious new restaurant and bar took over what had been Boiler Nine in the Seaholm development. First, there’s the basement bar Subterra Agave Bar which opened in early February, and then there’s the multi-level Ember Kitchen & Subterra restaurant, with a live-fire dish menu that leans heavily in the Latin American angle, in mid-February. DOWNTOWN — San Antonio chef Steve McHugh opened his first Austin restaurant and bar this year, both found within the Hyatt Centric Congress Avenue Austin as of early February. Luminaire is the ground-floor restaurant focused on New Texan fare with Spanish inflections, plus a whole charcuterie program. Las Bis is the eighth-floor bar with tinned fish and cocktails plus a patio overlooking downtown. (721 Congress Avenue)

DOWNTOWN — Nashville distillery Standard Proof Whiskey Co. chose Austin for the location of its first out-of-state tasting room in early February. The bar offers flights of whiskeys, including many of its infused ryes, as well as cocktails and food such as hot chicken and pulled pork. (51 Rainey Street)

CEDAR PARK — A new seafood restaurant, Sweetwater Oyster Bar, debuted in mid-January, helmed by executive chef Poc Saenz Reyes, formerly of Grizzelda’s, P6, and now-closed Rosedale Kitchen and Bar. There’s a large raw bar menu, including oysters, Gulf shrimp cocktails, and a seafood tower; along with soups, salads, seafood plates, and more. (1500 East Whitestone Boulevard, Suite 200)

CEDAR PARK — A sprawling entertainment-restaurant-bar-lounge space, Spare Birdie Public House, opened in late January with loads of activities, foods, and drinks. DOMAIN NORTHSIDE — The Archer Hotel expanded its hotel bar mini-chain AKB into the former Second Bar + Kitchen space in late January. There’s a New American menu courtesy of executive chef Kendal Duque and chef de cuisine Mario Medina, as well as cocktails. (3121 Palm Way, Suite 101)

TRAVIS HEIGHTS — The vegan restaurant teams of Mission Street Burrito and Fair Game opened a burger-centric spot, Mission Burger Co., in mid-January, taking over what had been many a now-closed vegan restaurant corner within River City Market. There are burgers made with Impossible patties, along with vegan chicken sandwiches, nuggets, and tenders. (2209 South Congress Avenue)

CEDAR PARK — Austin Thai restaurant Sap’s opened up a third restaurant dubbed Super Saps in mid-January, as reported by Williamson Reporter. (12160 West Parmer Lane, Suite 190)

CENTRAL EAST AUSTIN — New bar and restaurant Lucky’s opened in mid-January, with a chef and beverage director both from Chicago. There are what it describes as Mexican fusion dishes — quesadilla with kimchi, sweet chile chicken wings — as well as cocktails, frozens, and beers. DOWNTOWN — A new sports bar, Champions, opened near two downtown hotels this mid-January. It serves food all day, from breakfast to lunch to dinner, with an American menu, along with beers and cocktails. (300 East Fourth Street, Suite 1)

ZILKERMasa Y Más is a new Mexican restaurant that opened in early January, backed by the co-founding partners of Hopdoddy Burger Bar among other restaurants. CEDAR PARK — Austin restaurant Sip Saam Thai opened its third restaurant, Cilantro Grill By SipSaam Thai, in early January, as reported by Community Impact. The menu is Hawaiian and Thai, featuring dishes like barbecue meats paired with macaroni salad, rice, and grilled pineapples; loco moco, spam musubi; pad see ew; curries; and more. TRAVIS HEIGHTS — Food truck Vision transformed into a physical coffee shop in early January. The menu includes coffees, matcha, and teas with what co-owners and sisters Adara Ostdiek and Sabra Stratford describe as adaptogenic ingredients.
